I’ll say it first…gardening with kids isn’t easy! Dirt gets everywhere. Water gets every and possibly drown the plants. And yes, they’ll even pull your precious plants out instead of the weeds. It can be a mess…but it is so beneficial for their little hearts and brains!

Here’s out little community garden box that we’re using while we don’t have a yard. So, don’t worry because you can reach out to your city to see if there are any community gardens that you can become apart of. You could even start your own if they’ll let you! If you have a yard then lucky you! Just get some dirt and seeds and start planting!

A raised planter box is a great way to start your kids off on the right foot. You can even give them a little square of dirt that is all their own so they can do what they want with it! With the help of your supervision of course. Now I’m no expert on gardening, but I do know that there are certain plants that do well together and certain plants that will ruin each other so just do a little research on what you should plant together. Start planting something that your kid already eats. If your little one loves carrots, then by golly plant those! If they love chomping on little cherry tomatoes, go get those seeds from the store! If you won’t eat them..don’t plant them.

4 Reasons

  1. It teaches delayed gratification. In this world of technology waiting for something can be a really hard thing especially for a kid! If they don’t have their chicken nuggets on the table in 5 minutes then they are going to lose it! But watching something grow from a little seed will give them such satisfaction that you and your kid will be hooked! It takes time. A lot of time and a lot of water and sun.
  2. Cultivating a garden teaches these youngsters responsibility. Especially if you don’t have enough money for a dog…..a plant is a lot cheaper let me tell you! It’s also fun and rewarding to be able to see a little plant sprout up out of the ground and eventually produce something you can eat. My daughter was so excited when her little tomato plant started to grow. She was so excited that she over watered it because she thought it wasn’t getting enough food. The smile on her face when she ate the first little tomato was amazing to watch!
  3. They’re more likely to eat that darned vegetable if they’ve watered it and watched it grow from a little seed! Like my daughter with her little tomato plant! If I took the time and effort to water this plant you bet your bottom dollar I’m eating that thing for lunch! It’s also a great opportunity to teach your kiddos about the importance of nutrition! Find some more nutrition tips here.
  4. It’s also been studied and proven that being outside helps people relax and reduces stress. There’s a lot more health benefits that would take a whole other blog post to tell you about so just trust me for now! Or go research all the wonderful benefits being outside can give you! But I think we all know that being outside for even 5 minutes can boost our mood (unless it’s snowing…hehe kidding)!

I hope you find the time to garden with your kids this year even if it’s just a few plants inside! Just start and I guarantee you and your kid will have fun! Happy gardening!

Have a blessed day!
