How Many Clothes Does My Kid (Really) Need?

Wow! Now this is a loaded question! I know that as moms we want to get all the things for our kids! If it’s cute…buy it! If it fits…..buy it! If they’re going to wear it some day….buy it! There have been too many times to count that I will buy an article of clothing for my daughter and she won’t wear it. I used to put her in anything I wanted, but now she dresses herself and picks out her own outfit. So she has some pants and shirts that she’s never worn! It’s really frustrating, but I have something to help you cut back on the frustration! I created a clothing inventory guide to help you actually get the amount of clothes your child really needs. Get the free download Clothing Inventory. You’ll see that you only need a certain number of clothes and a certain number of shoes and so on. Your kid doesn’t need a whole drawer full of shirts or underwear!

So now you know about how many clothes your kid should have, let me tell you the why.

  1. Too overwhelming. It can be so overwhelming and draining to have to go through 12 shirts before you find the right one. That’s why you hear your kid saying “I have nothing to wear!” Sound familiar? It happens to adults too! If you find yourself saying that often…you probably have too many clothes as well!
  2. Sentimental. If everything is sentimental, then nothing is. If you’re only keeping certain articles of clothing for the sentimental value, stop it right now! Jk do what you want, but seriously. I get keeping some onesies because she was wearing that the first time she smiled at you or he was wearing that shirt the first time he took his first steps! I have also kept clothes because of those firsts! Or maybe great aunt Mary made this sweater for your sweet little one and you must keep it! Yes, keep the clothes that are super special to you and to your kid, but don’t go overboard. Maybe pick an outfit from each season that you want to keep (especially if you plan on having more kids), but you don’t need to keep a whole closet full!
  3. Too small. Kids will outgrow their clothes faster than you can say “Where’s the time gone!” There were a few outfits that my kids didn’t even get to wear because by the time I found them in their drawer they were too big! Have a few outfits that you absolutely love and want them to wear so that your kids get to wear them often and have fun memories with them!
  4. Easy clean up. It just makes sense that when there are less clothes…there’s less of a mess to clean up. Not to mention less laundry! If it’s easy to clean up then your kids are more likely to clean up with you. If they have 50 shirts to put away then they won’t do it. But if they have may 7 shirts, they’re more likely to help you put them away.

I hope you’ll take this as something to help you and not another thing that you’re doing wrong, because we’re all just trying to do our best! This is just one thing that will help you if you’re already too overwhelmed in your busy life! Once you declutter your kid’s clothes, it will be easier after that!

Have a blessed day!
